TikTok carousels: how to post one and how carousel ads work

By TokCloner team · Updated

Short answer

A TikTok carousel is a post of still images that people swipe through. You make one in the TikTok app with Photo (photo mode), up to 35 images. Advertisers can also run Carousel Ads in TikTok Ads Manager: 2 to 35 JPG or PNG images, required music, and one caption and call-to-action for the whole ad.

A TikTok carousel is a post made of still images that viewers swipe through. You make one in the TikTok app by tapping Add post (+), then Photo, then Upload, and choosing up to 35 images. Brands can also pay for Carousel Ads in TikTok Ads Manager, which take 2 to 35 images, need music, and share one caption and call-to-action.

This guide covers both: the free, organic carousel and the paid ad formats. All specs were checked on TikTok’s help centers as of October 2026.

TikTok uses the word “carousel” for two different things:

  • Organic photo posts. When TikTok launched Photo Mode in October 2022, it called it “a new carousel format” for still images that play one after another and that viewers can swipe at their own pace. People also call these photo carousels, swipe slideshows, or just TikTok slideshows.
  • Carousel Ads. In Ads Manager, a Carousel Ad is an in-feed ad format built from images. Images show in order, and people swipe through them and can tap through to your link.

The organic format has grown fast. TikTok For Business reported in September 2024 that the Photo Mode publish rate grew five-fold between June 2023 and July 2024, based on its internal data.

  1. In the TikTok app, tap the Add post (+) button at the bottom.
  2. Tap Photo, then tap Upload.
  3. Select your images in the order you want them. You can add up to 35.
  4. Tap Next. Swipe between photos to add text, stickers, a filter or a crop to each one, and add one sound for the post.
  5. Tap Next again. Use Edit cover to pick the slide that shows on your profile, then add a description, hashtags and privacy settings.
  6. Tap Post, or Drafts to save it for later.

Make each image 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16) so it fills the screen. If TikTok turns your photos into a video, you started from Upload on the camera screen or from a template; start again from Photo. The full walkthrough, with troubleshooting, is in how to make a slideshow on TikTok.

How to post a carousel on TikTok that people swipe through

A carousel only works if people get past the first image. These habits help:

  • Put the hook on slide one as text. “4 mistakes that ruin a first apartment” tells people why to swipe. A pretty photo alone doesn’t.
  • Pay off on slide two. If slide two is another teaser, people leave.
  • One idea per slide. Short lines in large type, in the middle of the frame, away from TikTok’s buttons on the right and caption at the bottom.
  • Keep it tight. You can use 35 images, but most list and how-to posts need 5 to 10.
  • End with one ask: follow, save, comment, or tap the link in your bio.

For structures that work in carousel form, see mistakes listicles, before-and-after and tier lists, or the slideshow ideas guide.

TikTok describes Carousel Ads as an alternative to video for advertisers who don’t have video ready or want to reuse image assets from other platforms. As of October 2026, TikTok’s help center lists these details:

  • Regions: all regions where performance auction is available.
  • Supported ad types: Traffic, Web Conversions, App Promotion, Lead Generation, Product Sales (Catalog), and Brand Auction Reach.
  • Placements: automatic placement or TikTok only. Automatic placement filters out TikTok Ad Network and Global App Bundle traffic.
  • Spark Ads: Standard Carousels can run as Spark Ads or non-Spark Ads. VSA Carousels are non-Spark only.

There are two types:

  • Standard Carousel. Your own images, one caption, one call-to-action button, and one URL for every image.
  • VSA Carousel (Video Shopping Ads). Built from a product catalog, so each product image can link to its own product page. For Smart+ Catalog Ads, TikTok creates the carousel automatically.

Two details trip people up:

  • Commercial Music Library tracks don’t play on TikTok Ad Network. A carousel with library music runs silent there. Upload your own music, or split the campaign into a “TikTok only” ad group with library music and a “TikTok Ad Network only” ad group with uploaded music.
  • The 100 KB suggestion is tight. A full 1080 x 1920 image is usually bigger. For ads, export at 720 x 1280 as a compressed JPG, and check the preview in Ads Manager.
  1. Start a new campaign and choose a supported objective, such as Traffic, Web Conversions or App Promotion.
  2. Pick the promotion type: website or app.
  3. Under Identity, turn Use TikTok account to deliver Spark Ads on for a Spark Ad, or off for a non-Spark Ad.
  4. Choose the Carousel ad format.
  5. Upload images from your computer or pick them from your image library.
  6. Use the preview on the left to check the order. Edit or delete images with the buttons on the right.
  7. Leave Smart Cover Image Selection on if you want TikTok to choose the cover based on performance, or turn it off.
  8. Add music from TikTok’s library or upload your own, then launch.

Save carousels in Creative Library

If you run many ads, build carousels once and reuse them. Go to Tools, then Creative Library, then Creative Assets, and open the Carousels tab. Click Create Carousel, select at least 2 images, add music, and click Confirm.

To use a saved carousel, click Add creatives at the ad level, open the Creative Library tab, then the Carousels sub-tab. To change images or music in a saved carousel, copy it and edit the copy. The same area has an Auto-generated tab where TikTok can generate carousels with AI.

You don’t need Ads Manager to put money behind a carousel that already works.

Promote, inside the TikTok app

TikTok’s help center says Promote is available for all short and long video and photo-mode content, but not Stories. To use it, you must:

  • be at least 18
  • have a creator or Business Account
  • post publicly, with original sound or a sound licensed for commercial use

Tap the More options (…) button on your post, tap Promote, choose a goal, pick a promotion pack or a custom budget, and pay. TikTok notes that promotion results are estimates, not guarantees.

Spark Ads, inside Ads Manager

Spark Ads run your organic post as an ad, and the likes, comments, shares and follows count toward the original post. Standard Carousel ads support Spark Ads. Use this when you want Ads Manager’s targeting and conversion tracking on a post that has already proven itself.

  • Start organic if you’re testing what your audience cares about. It’s free, and every post tells you which hooks hold attention.
  • Use Promote when one organic carousel clearly beats the rest and you want more people to see it, with little setup.
  • Use Ads Manager when you need conversion tracking, detailed targeting, a product catalog, or placements beyond TikTok.
  • Use a VSA Carousel if you sell many products from a catalog and want each image to open its own product page.

TikTok also reported that advertisers see 19% more conversions in campaigns that combine video and images, based on its June 2024 internal data. If you already run video ads, carousels are a cheap way to add that variety.

TikTok’s own advice on image ads is to make them feel native, for example by adding music to existing assets. In practice:

  • Make it look like a post, not a banner. Text on photos, styled the way people post organically, fits the feed better than layouts with a logo in every corner.
  • Carry the message in the images. You get one caption for the whole ad, so each image has to make sense on its own.
  • Give each image one job: problem, product, proof, offer.
  • Test versions. Copy a carousel in Creative Library, change only the first image, and compare.

A quick way to get native-looking images is to start from an organic carousel format that already works in your niche. TokCloner rebuilds a public TikTok slideshow or Instagram carousel for your business, with new text and new images. It exports 1080 x 1920 PNGs only, so resize and compress them to match the ad spec before uploading. It doesn’t post, schedule or run ads for you.
